The Sky is Falling!
Desperate Need for Safe Shelter!!

Cheri just returned from India and observed the Bon Children’s Welfare Center (BCWC), where the children live, is in urgent need of structural repair.  The BCWC is located in the Tibetan Refugee Settlement Area of Dholanji, India.  The building is literally crumbling!  Portions of the building have the potential to fall anytime soon.  Geshe Yungdrung, who is in charge of the children and the building, explained how poor construction allowed water to enter via the roof, and seep into the walls & dorm ceilings.  The water infiltrated the electrical system which caused electrical explosive outages and the loss of electricity in parts of the building.  Mold, electrical fire charring, and structural damage to the dorm area ceilings are visible.  See attached photos.

This is a critical infrastructural, safety, and health issue. Time is of the essence! The rainy season will start in June and could result in catastrophic damages and increase the cost of repairs.  A dangerously damaged third floor external overhang is directly above a high traffic stairway for the children & staff. The heavy rains could cause portions of the structure to fall resulting in injury or death to the children and staff.

The anticipated cost of this project is $20,000.00 USD.  The water issue will need to be fixed first, then the re-wiring of the electrical system, followed by the structural repair.  This building was built in the year 2000 with very few repairs since then.  Ideally, we hope to have the project completed before the start of the rainy season.  We need your help!

Donations in any amount are greatly appreciated and can really make a difference!

Heart Mantra Foundation & friends have supported and provided full college scholarships to Norbu, who is now completing his Master’s Degree at Government College of Art Chandigarh, India.  After receiving his Batchelor’s Degree, Norbu was the college’s number one choice into their Master’s program. He is the first alumni of the BCWC to earn a Master’s Degree and the first person in his semi-nomadic Himalayan family to attend school.  The first 10 donors of $1,000.00 will also receive a more detailed bio about Norbu and this original painting.  You can view some of Norbu’s artwork at www.instagram.com/wangyalnorbu
